Refurbished Mac Studio for local AI in 2026
Apple sells four Mac Studios refurbished, from $3,049 to $7,729. They are the previous generation, with the same one-year warranty as a new Mac. For local models the trade is simple: slower chips, more memory per dollar. This page prices it.
What refurbished buys
Apple Certified Refurbished is not a reseller’s “like new” label. Apple replaces any worn shell, and the machine carries the same one-year warranty as a new Mac. The catalogue carries no M5 or M6 machine, so every refurb here is one generation behind.
That one generation costs speed and buys memory. On the Grid, the refurbished M3 Ultra 256GB is $30.2 per nominal GB of memory; the new M5 Ultra 256GB is $37.1. If a model refusing to load is the problem, refurbished is the cheap answer.
The four boxes
Speed is Llama-3.3-70B at Q4_K_M, computed the same way on every row. The M4 Max notes matter: Apple also sold a 14-core variant at a lower bandwidth, and only the 16-core builds below are the fast ones.
| Machine | Usable | Bandwidth | 70B Q4 tok/s | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mac Studio, M4 Max, refurb | 59GB | 546GB/s | 8.4 | $3,049 |
| Mac Studio, M3 Ultra, refurb | 88GB | 819GB/s | 12.6 | $4,329 |
| Mac Studio, M4 Max, refurb | 120GB | 546GB/s | 8.4 | $4,409 |
| Mac Studio, M3 Ultra, refurb | 248GB | 819GB/s | 12.6 | $7,729 |
One supply note Apple states itself: refurbished stock “is usually very limited” and often runs out. A row here can go dead faster than a new machine; the Grid shows what is actually orderable today.
What fits
The 64GB tier is the one memory erases: gpt-oss-120b misses Q4 and Q3 there, then loads on every larger box. The DeepSeek-V4-Flash and Qwen3-235B class only clears the bar on the 256GB machine.
| Model | 64GB | 96GB | 128GB | 256GB |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gemma-4-31B | Fits | Fits | Fits | Fits |
| Llama-3.3-70B | Fits | Fits | Fits | Fits |
| Qwen3-Coder-Next | Fits | Fits | Fits | Fits |
| gpt-oss-120b | Won't fit | Fits | Fits | Fits |
| MiniMax-M2 | Won't fit | Won't fit | Won't fit | Fits |
| Qwen3-235B-A22B | Won't fit | Won't fit | Won't fit | Fits |
| DeepSeek-V4-Flash | Won't fit | Won't fit | Won't fit | Fits |
| DeepSeek-V3 | Won't fit | Won't fit | Won't fit | Won't fit |
DeepSeek-V3 and the frontier giants fit nothing on this page at any quant; they need the 512GB tier, which refurb never reaches. The 128GB guide covers that ceiling model by model.
The trade, priced
Each refurb, beside the new machine it stands against on the Grid. The saving is list price against list price; both numbers update hourly.
| Refurb | Refurb | New | Save | tok/s |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mac Studio, M4 Max, refurb | $3,049 | Mac Studio, M5 Max $3,499 | $450 | 8.4 / 9.4 |
| Mac Studio, M3 Ultra, refurb | $4,329 | Mac Studio, M5 Max $5,099 | $770 | 12.6 / 9.4 |
| Mac Studio, M4 Max, refurb | $4,409 | Mac Studio, M5 Max $5,099 | $690 | 8.4 / 9.4 |
| Mac Studio, M3 Ultra, refurb | $7,729 | Mac Studio, M5 Ultra $9,499 | $1,770 | 12.6 / 18.5 |
Read the M4 Max row twice before buying it. Same usable memory as the new M5 Max 128GB, and the saving is only $690. The speed drops from 9.4 to 8.4 tokens per second. The two Ultras are the one-way deals: 819GB/s of bandwidth beats the new M5 Max’s 614, and the memory per dollar matches nothing new.
Mac Studio, M4 Max: Same memory tier, the newer chip $450 above it.
Mac Studio, M3 Ultra: No new machine sits at 96GB: the step up is the M5 Max 128, for $770 more and 205GB/s less.
Mac Studio, M4 Max: Same 120GB usable pool; the refurb adds a second terabyte of storage.
Mac Studio, M3 Ultra: The identical memory pool, $1,770 below the new chip.
