Can the Mac mini M5 Pro 64GB run a 70B model?

Published · Prices checked 22–25 Oct 2026

Yes, on our memory estimate: Llama-3.3-70B-Instruct at Q4_K_M should fit with 8K context. Expect est. 4.7 tok/s, not a measured benchmark.

The answer

Q4_K_M · one sequence

The same capacity arithmetic applies to DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Llama-70B at Q4_K_M. This is the 70B distilled model, not the much larger full DeepSeek-R1.

Buy 64GB for capacity, not instant answers. A 300-token reply takes roughly 64 seconds at that estimated decode rate, before prompt processing.

Why 64GB is enough at moderate context

The quantizer publishes a 42.52GB Q4_K_M download for each of these two models. That is the weight file, not the entire working set.

Our planning allowance reserves 5.12GB for macOS, leaving 58.88GB. Add 1.2GB for runtime buffers and approximately 0.328GB per 1K context tokens for FP16 KV cache.

Here, K means 1,000 tokens, matching the Grid’s planning convention. These allowances are estimates, not measured peak memory.

DeepSeek’s publisher config specifies 80 layers, eight KV heads and a 128-element head dimension. Each cached token stores both K and V, at two bytes per element.

2 × 2 bytes × 80 layers × 8 KV heads × 128 × 1,000 tokens = 0.32768GB.

Llama’s geometry is corroborated by Unsloth’s config, not directly verified from Meta’s access-restricted config. The table uses the unrounded 0.32768GB cache calculation.

Metal residency limits and other open applications can reduce what the runner can actually use. Cache memory scales across concurrent sequences; this table assumes one sequence and FP16 cache.

Start at 8K context with one model loaded and other heavy applications closed. Check memory pressure and whether the runner offloads layers or begins swapping.

At 32K, the arithmetic leaves less room for variation. At 128K, this FP16-cache estimate does not fit.

A model’s advertised context limit is not a hardware guarantee. The Grid uses effective bits per weight, rather than this particular published download size.

Its Q4 estimate is 42.26GB of weights, so its headroom differs slightly.

How fast is est. 4.7 tok/s?

Apple specifies 307GB/s memory bandwidth for M5 Pro. Our dense-model estimate assumes 65 percent effective bandwidth:

307GB/s × 0.65 ÷ 42.52GB = est. 4.7 tok/s.

This models single-stream token decoding with weights resident in memory. It does not predict prompt processing, time to first token, concurrent users or reasoning length.

Our 25 Oct search verified no reproducible independent llama.cpp 70B Q4 benchmark for this exact configuration. That does not prove none exists.

The efficiency coefficient is our planning assumption, not measured M5 Pro 70B efficiency.

A published llama.cpp result identifies the 15-core CPU, 16-core GPU M5 Pro mini with 64GB. It measures Llama 2 7B Q4_0 at 67.6 tok/s for tg128.

That is a different model and quant, not evidence that a 70B Q4_K_M model achieves the same rate.

Q3_K_M reduces the published weight file to 34.27GB and raises the bandwidth estimate to est. 5.8 tok/s. The quantizer labels it low quality.

Q3 is therefore a tradeoff, not a requirement for the estimated 8K Q4 fit. Begin with Q4 and evaluate your own prompts before sacrificing quality.

Which 64GB mini should you buy?

Dated prices · not live checkout quotes

$1,699 is the base 24GB M5 Pro price, not a 64GB price. Do not order that configuration for this Q4 workload.

$2,699 buys the 15-core CPU, 16-core GPU M5 Pro with 64GB and 512GB from Apple. We checked that complete selection on 25 Oct 2026.

$2,899 buys the 18-core CPU, 20-core GPU version with the same memory and storage. Both 25 Oct selections include standard 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet and no trade-in.

The 20-core GPU version with 64GB and 1TB cost $3,199 in our 22 Oct check. These are dated Apple prices, not promises about a later checkout.

Both M5 Pro chip options have the same published 307GB/s bandwidth. Our decode model therefore predicts the same rate, not a guaranteed measured tie.

The larger GPU can matter for compute-heavy prompt processing. It does not increase the bandwidth number in this estimate.

For this capacity-first workload, choose the $2,699 lower-core configuration unless your other tasks justify more cores. The current Grid mini row tracks the higher-core configuration.

$2,899 was also B&H’s price on 25 Oct for the matching 18-core CPU, 20-core GPU, 64GB/512GB configuration, SKU Z1UD0007P. The listing said special order, not in stock.

The fetched listing did not provide a delivery estimate in this check. Confirm availability and the checkout price before ordering.

For faster decoding at the same capacity, compare the 64GB M5 Max Studio. Its 614GB/s yields est. 9.4 tok/s with the same assumptions, not a benchmarked twofold gain.

Compare the mini and Studio before paying for memory you do not need.
